Internet Policy

Here is some information on how I conduct myself on the Internet as a mental health professional and how you can expect me to respond to various interactions that may occur between us on the Internet.

Email

If you choose to email me content related to your sessions, please be aware

  • that email is not completely secure or confidential.
  • all emails are retained in the logs of your and my Internet service providers and are, in theory, available to be read by the system administrator(s).
  • any emails I send to or receive from you and any responses become a part of your legal record.

I read all e-mail I receive. If you choose to discuss content related to your sessions by e-mail, I will address that content with you in person at our next session.

Email can be used to give notice you will miss an appointment, or want to reschedule or set up an appointment. However, the most efficient way to schedule appointments with me is through my online booking system, www.tungle.me/shulamit.

Social Media

I believe that the times we work together constitute sacred time and space, and what happens there is holy. Keeping our interactions out of the realm of the social and mundane and almost exclusively within the container of our sessions recognizes ours is not a social relationship but a sacred one, and prevents it from being profaned. Special things happen in session. What comes can be thought of as a young plant sprouting; I want to be sure to protect it from the rabbits, deer and groundhogs who – harmless though they might be – have a tendency to munch its tender green shoots.

Friending, following or adding current or former clients on social media sites and/or communicating via these sites may also blur the boundaries of our therapeutic relationship. This adds a layer to our interactions that I believe is better left out so that we can focus our time together in sessions on the issues for which you are consulting me.

In addition, friending, following or adding current or former clients on social media sites and/or communicating via these sites can compromise your confidentiality and our respective privacy. Maintaining confidentiality and privacy is a legal issue and I have committed to respecting both the law and the codes of ethics of my profession as a strategy for protecting us both. As a result, engaging with me via social media may mean that these exchanges become part of your legal record, since I may document and archive them in your file.

You are free to follow my professional account on Twitter and/or like my professional Facebook page (note that I will not friend or follow you back, or respond to messages) and at the same time, please be aware that, in doing so, you may be revealing that you are or have been my client.

Confidentiality means (among other things) that I cannot act in any manner that has the potential to reveal you are or have been my client. You, on the other hand, are more than welcome to tell anyone you wish that you’ve worked with me and/or how you feel about the work we did together, in any forum of your choosing.

Note: I am grateful to Dr. Keely Kolmes (@drkkolmes on Twitter and www.drkkolmes.com) for her thorough explorations of  the issues related to social media, mental health professionals and clients, and for informing my own approach.
